As a dedicated advocate for quality education and a passionate member of the Spotsylvania community, I'm Jennifer Craig-Ford, candidate for Spotsylvania County School Board, Battlefield District.
With my background as a parent, local business owner, and attorney, I bring a unique perspective to the school board. My experience has taught me the importance of effective leadership, strategic planning, and community engagement.
As a parent and community member, I'm committed to ensuring our schools provide a world-class education that prepares our children for success. I'm dedicated to listening to the concerns of our educators and community in order to work collaboratively to address the challenges facing our schools. I have had four of my own kids and four international students attend Spotsylvania schools. My youngest son is a current student at Courtland High School. I have navigated the IEP bureaucracy and understand parents' frustrations from a personal perspective. I have watched the facilities age poorly for more than a decade and understand that the infrastructure is suffering.
As someone who has seen firsthand the impact of school violence - my niece was a survivor of a recent school shooting - I understand the importance of addressing the root causes of this issue. Conversations with my niece and other students have made it clear that while safety measures like drills and metal detectors are necessary, they are not enough on their own.
Research shows that many school shooting incidents are perpetrated by students who felt bullied, unheard, or struggling with peers or at home. To prevent this, we need a comprehensive approach that includes programs to help students develop healthy relationships with peers and adults. By teaching our students the skills they need to express themselves effectively and resolve conflicts peacefully, we can help prevent violence and create a safer, more supportive school community. This is a critical component of any safety strategy, and one that cannot be replaced by physical security measures alone.
I'm excited to serve our community and work towards a brighter future for our children, the best possible education to our students.
I am running for office because I believe our school board should be a collaborative and functional body that puts the needs of our students and community first. As a non-partisan candidate, I'm committed to leaving politics at the door and working with fellow board members to make informed, student-centered decisions.
As a significant recipient of our county's tax base, our schools have a responsibility to allocate funds effectively. I believe the School Board must prioritize investments that directly benefit our students and educators.
Our facilities are aging and quickly becoming insufficient to house the students we can expect in the near future with the expected growth the county is experiencing. Student enrichment is falling by the wayside.
I believe in teaching students effective conflict resolution, problem-solving, and communication skills to help them navigate challenging situations and build healthy relationships with peers and adults. By addressing the root causes of violence and providing students with the tools they need to express themselves, we can create a safer and more supportive learning environment. This approach, combined with necessary safety measures, will help prevent violence and ensure our schools are a place where students can thrive.
I'm excited to serve our community and work towards a brighter future for our children. By putting aside partisan differences and working together, I believe we can create a school board that truly serves the needs, interests and talents of our community.
A key priority should be supporting our teaching staff by providing competitive compensation, ongoing training, and opportunities for professional growth. By retaining, training, and recruiting experienced educators with a proven track record of success, we can ensure our students receive the high-quality education they deserve.
